Your Bat is a Tool of the Trade: The Victor Sports Warranty Let's be honest—your cricket bat is a working tool. It's made from English Willow, a naturally soft timber designed to deliver performance rather than durability. Every time it strikes a cricket ball, the wood absorbs enormous force. Surface cracks, dents and edge wear aren't faults—they're simply part of owning and using a quality cricket bat. Cost does not make a bat invincible. In fact, many premium Grade 1 bats are made from softer willow to maximise performance. The trade-off is that they often mark and crack more easily than denser lower grades. Premium performance doesn't mean indestructible—it simply means the wood behaves differently Every Victor bat is handcrafted from a natural material. No two pieces of willow are identical, which means every bat will age and respond to use a little differently. Fortunately, most cricket bats can be professionally repaired, often returning them to many more seasons of use. Repair Over Replacement Cricket bats are designed to be repaired. In many cases, replacing a handle or repairing damage restores the bat to excellent playing condition. Every warranty claim is individually assessed by to determine the most appropriate outcome and the majority of successful claims result in a professional repair, not a full replacement. Broken Handles : If your handle snaps due to a manufacturing fault, Victor Sports will replace the handle and re-bind the bat free of charge. A broken handle is not grounds for a brand-new bat. Minor Cracks: While surface and edge cracks are considered standard maintenance and are not covered under warranty, they can usually be repaired at the customer's expense. Replacements: A replacement bat will only be offered where our inspection confirms an unrepairable manufacturing defect. What IS Covered (Our 12-Month Guarantee) Every Victor bat is backed by a 12-month warranty covering genuine manufacturing defects from the date of purchase. This warranty strictly covers material faults and manufacturing defects believed not to be the fault of the consumer, including: Handle Breaks: Structural failures of the cane handle that are not caused by bowling machines or extreme misuse. Severe Internal Blade Failure: Major structural splitting deemed by our bat-makers to be an inherent fault in the wood (provided the bat was fully prepared and used correctly). What is NOT Covered (The Exclusions) Like any piece of sporting equipment, your bat requires proper preparation and care. The following issues will void your warranty as they are considered improper use, poor maintenance, or standard player wear-and-tear: Insufficient Preparation: Damage resulting from failing to properly knock-in, oil, or apply a toe guard and protective facing. Surface Cracking (Facial Cracks): Small cracks on the face of the bat are perfectly normal. They are a natural byproduct of the soft willow being compacted by the hard ball and do not affect the bat's performance. Mis-timed Shots & Yorkers: Cracks or denting on the edges, shoulders, or toe resulting from off-centre strikes, excessive twisting in the hands, pitching Yorkers, or striking the pitch. Bowling Machines & Improper Use: Damage caused by synthetic bowling machine balls, cheap/hard composite balls, or hitting anything other than a standard leather cricket ball (e.g., the stumps or the ground). Environmental Damage: Swelling, splitting, or rotting of the toe from use on wet synthetic or damp turf wickets without proper rubber toe protection. Brittleness or splitting from storing the bat in direct sunlight or high heat, such as inside a car boot. How to Make a Claim If your Bat has suffered a failure and needs assessment, follow these steps: Stop using it immediately: Continued use of a damaged or cracked bat can turn a minor, easily repairable issue into an unrepairable break, which will completely void your claim. Gather your proof: You must have a valid store receipt or online order number. The warranty is non-transferable and applies only to the original buyer. Knocking-In your new Cricket Bat Getting a brand-new English Willow cricket bat is a great feeling but taking it straight to the middle for a match is a guaranteed way to ruin it. English Willow is naturally soft and fibrous. Knocking in is the tedious but non-negotiable process of compressing those wood fibres to give the bat its explosive power and protect it from snapping or cracking. Even if your bat is marketed as "pre-knocked in" or "ready to play," you must still complete this process. Factory pressing only does half the job; the rest is up to you. Here is the comprehensive, step-by-step guide to properly knocking in your cricket bat. TOOLS NEEDED Raw Linseed Oil: Specifically raw linseed oil (not boiled which dries too hard) or Cricket Bat Oil. A Soft Cloth: For applying the oil. A Wooden Bat Mallet: Do not use a ball in a sock for the initial stages; it does not provide enough concentrated compression. An Old Leather Cricket Ball: For the final testing phase. Steps Step 1: Oiling the Bat (For Unprepared Bats) If your bat already has a protective anti-scuff sheet on the face, skip to Step 2. You only oil exposed wood. The goal of oiling is to maintain moisture in the willow, preventing it from becoming brittle and snapping. Pour a 10-cent coin-sized drop of raw linseed oil onto your cloth. Rub the oil evenly across the exposed face, edges, and toe of the bat. Keep the oil entirely away from the splice (the V-shaped joint where the handle meets the blade), the stickers, and the very bottom of the toe if it has a rubber guard glued on. Lay the bat horizontally and let it dry for 24 hours. Repeat this process one more time. Over-oiling is a common mistake and adds unnecessary dead weight to the bat, so two light coats are plenty. Step 2: Knocking in the Edges The edges are highly vulnerable to cracking from mistimed shots. The goal here is to round them off and compress the wood, not crush it. Hold the bat firmly with one hand or place it on your lap. Strike the edge with your wooden mallet at a 45-degree angle. Start with light taps, glancing off the wood to slowly roll the edge backward. Gradually increase the force of your strikes. Work your way up and down both the inside and outside edges for about an hour total. Crucial Rule: Never hit the edges perfectly flat or square-on. This will dent and splinter the wood. Always use glancing, angled blows. Step 3: Knocking in the Toe The toe takes a massive beating from Yorkers and digging out full deliveries. It needs careful attention. Strike the face of the bat down near the toe area, gradually increasing force. Strike the bottom edge of the toe at a glancing 45-degree angle, just like you did with the side edges. Keep your strikes entirely clear of the absolute bottom of the bat. Hitting the very bottom resting point of the bat will cause the wood to split up the middle. Step 4: Knocking in the Face This is the most time-consuming part. You need to replicate the impact of a fast bowler delivering a rock-hard leather ball. Start tapping the face of the bat lightly with the mallet, working methodically from the toe up to just below the splice. Do not hit the splice itself or the handle. Slowly increase the power of your strikes. By the end of this process, you should be hitting the bat as hard as you can without feeling like you are deliberately trying to break it. Spend a minimum of 3 to 4 hours on the face of the bat. Pay special attention to the areas near the edges and the toe, blending the compressed face into the rounded edges you created earlier. Step 5: The Fingernail Test Before taking the bat to the nets, you need to check if the wood is sufficiently compressed. Press your thumbnail firmly into the face of the bat. If your nail leaves a deep, visible indent in the wood, it requires more time with the mallet. If the wood resists your nail and leaves little to no mark, you are ready for the next phase. Step 6: The Net Test (Old Balls Only)* Your bat is now ready to face leather, but only in a controlled environment. Take the bat to a net session and face slow throwdowns or gentle spin bowling. Strictly use high-quality, old, worn-in leather cricket balls. After a few shots, inspect the face and edges. If you see deep seam marks or small dents forming, stop immediately and return to the mallet for another hour. If the bat handles the old ball well, gradually increase the pace of the bowling over a few sessions. Before taking you bat to the nets it is recommended that you fit an ExtraTec sleeve to the face of the bat to help protect against surface cracking. What to Avoid (Fast-Track to Ruining Your Bat) Never use a bowling machine during the first few months. Bowling machine balls are made of hard synthetic plastic. They will destroy a brand-new bat and instantly void your warranty. Never use cheap, hard "composite" leather balls. These do not behave like match-quality balls and cause extreme internal damage to the willow. Never hit the back of the bat. The bat is designed to strike the ball on the flat face only. Hitting the back provides no benefit and weakens the spine. Don’t leave your bat in Car: Heat Damage (Summer): The temperature inside a parked car, especially the boot, can get extremely hot. The intense heat dries out the natural oils and moisture in the wood, making the blade much more brittle & susceptible to breakage. Warping and Splitting (Winter/Moisture): Freezing temperatures, or the condensation and dampness that build up inside a car overnight, cause the wood to swell and warp. When it dries out again, the wood can split and ruin your sweet spot.
